Frequently asked questions.
Last update 2003-11-12.

Writing a FAQ for myself makes me feel weird. But Molly said I should write one. It's pretty easy since these are true FAQs and I've answered them so many times. Tell me if you think there's something I missed.

Who you with? Where you at?

Daniel and I just celebrated our 8th year anniversary. He's in Chicago, me and my brother Peter are in the east bay, our parents are in San Jose, and my brother Jonathan and my soon-to-be sister-in-law Kristine live in San Francisco.

What does your tattoo say?

See the post or just the pic.

It says "Jita Kyoei," Japanese for "Mutual Welfare and Benefit." This is one of the sayings of Jigoro Kano, founder of Judo, and I like it because it also embodies cooperative and Buddhist principles. Jita kyoei is something that you can really feel if you're working with any decent Judo blackbelt.

My dad did the calligraphy for me.

What are you?

I am a bisexual hapa.

What is a hapa?

"Hapa" comes from a Hawaiian word hapa haole, which means half-white. But the definition has changed over time and space, so that the consensus definition reached by the Hapa Issues Forum in 1994 was "part Asian." Thus, for instance, a child who is 50% Filippino, 25% Chinese, and 25% white would be 100% hapa.

What is giardia / giardiacorp / Gxxx / GIAxxx ?

Giardia looks like this, Giardiacorp looks like this, and every Giardiacorp project has a unique job control number, such as G452 for the business cards, G299 for this personal website, G332 for the lightbox table I installed for Daniel, G341 for the sushi poster I made for my dad, and G320 for the analysis of Galielo Probe Mass Spectrometer data acquired in Jupiter's atmosphere.

Do you eat mammals?

I do not. Except I make up to one major exception and five minor exceptions per day. I don't have much of a rationale for this, but to some extent it is a reaction to having seen The Meatrix.

You didn't ask, but since this is my FAQ I am going to mention that I have also taken a lifetime vow never to spend any money at Starbucks EVER and I try to buy only fairly traded coffee, although I need to find a supplier around here.

Why don't you have a car?

I prefer to ride my bike, walk, and take public transit.
